Pirate Gulliver (Gullivarrr) Items List & How To Find Communicator
Pirate Gulliver, known as Gullivarrr, is a lost sailor special character that shows up on your beach in Animal Crossing: New Horizons (ACNH)! Learn about all of Pirate Gulliver’s Pirate item rewards and how to find his Communicator in this guide.
How To Find Pirate Gulliver
Pirate Gulliver can be found randomly washed up ashore on your island’s beaches in Animal Crossing: New Horizons starting from 5AM until the beginning of the next day. You must have purchased a Wet Suit for him to appear.
Unfortunately, there’s no way to predict exactly when he will show up, but it’s likely you’ll encounter him about once every 1 or 2 weeks. By far the most common days you’ll see him are on weekdays, although weekends appear to be possible in rare circumstances like when there is no K.K. Slider concert on a Saturday.
When you do spot Pirate Gulliver washed up on your island beach in his red pirate attire, talk to him (or whack him with a net for fun!) repeatedly until he fully wakes up and begins a conversation with you.
He’ll inform you of his unfortunate troubles getting thrown overboard from his ship once again, and then look for his NookPhone to pull out for communicating back with the ship only to find it missing in action!
How To Get Pirate Gulliver’s Communicator
To help Pirate Gulliver get back in touch with his shipmates out at sea in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you’ll need to find his Communicator that resembles a NookPhone and return it to him. Is he asking for Communicator Parts instead? Check out our regular non-pirate Gulliver guide here.
You can find the Communicator item hidden deep in your island’s surrounding ocean, accessible only by equipping a Wet Suit and going for a swim! For the best chance of finding the Communicator, look for a relatively low amount of bubbles and a shadow that is small without any movement like in the screenshot below.
When you spot some bubbles in the ocean, swim towards them and press the Y Button to dive! Keep swimming towards the bubbles until you catch the sea creature or item, which hopefully will be a Communicator!
From our experience, you’ll typically find the Communicator on your first, second, or third attempt at catching something in the ocean while diving. If you didn’t find the Communicator, keep trying to catch a few more until you get it.
Once you’ve found Pirate Gulliver’s Communicator and have it stored in your inventory, head back to the area where you first found Gullivarrr earlier and speak with him. He’ll be pleased to take the Communicator from you and send a reward to you in your mailbox the next day! Pirate Gulliver Rewards
There are three different types of rewards you can get from helping out Pirate Gulliver in Animal Crossing: New Horizons (ACNH)!
Pirate Set Furniture & Clothing Items
Every time that you help find Pirate Gulliver’s Communicator in the ocean, he’ll send you a special Pirate Set Furniture or Clothing item reward in the mail. These unique items are themed to the pirate life featuring both appropriate costumes and furniture for a ship.
Pirate Set items are exclusive to Pirate Gulliver and cannot be acquired in any other way, in addition to being un-orderable in the Nook Shopping catalog, so you should definitely hang onto them in your storage as you can’t get them again easily.
From our experience, Pirate Gulliver is usually kind enough to refrain from giving you duplicate variants until you’ve received every completely unique item first. If you’re looking to get every furniture item once, this is great! However, if you want multiple of a single item, then this could be quite bothersome and increase the grind.
In total, there are 19 completely unique Pirate Gulliver items to obtain, plus extra different color variations for some. Given that Pirate Gulliver can appear as infrequently as once per two weeks in our experience, it could take you quite some time to acquire all of the items!

Find Rusted Parts In Recycle Bin or Turn Communicator Into Rusted Parts
Another reward you can receive from helping Pirate Gulliver on your beach, just like the regular version of Gulliver, is receiving special Rusted Part items! Each time that you assist Pirate Gulliver, you will find a handy Rusted Part item inside the Recycling Box at Resident Services.
In addition to appearing in the Recycle Bin, you can get extra Rusted Parts by betraying Pirate Gulliver and not helping him! When you find his Communicator, just leave it in your inventory and don’t return it to him.
Then when the next day begins, the Communicator will transform into a stack of 5 Rusted Parts in your inventory! This happens because Pirate Gulliver is no longer on your island, so it can’t be returned to him. Pirate Gulliver is more efficient than the regular Gulliver too, since you only have to find one Communicator to get 5 Rusted Parts, instead of hunting five Communicator Parts.
Rusted Parts can be used to craft hard to get items like the giant Robot Hero furniture, and in fact you’ll need 30 Rusted Parts to craft it, so be sure to hang onto these valuable parts!
Unlock The Golden Shovel DIY Crafting Recipe
After you assist either Pirate Gulliver or the regular version of Gulliver with his troubles on 30 different occasions, he’ll reward you with a special letter in the mail the next day!
Inside this letter, Gulliver will thank you for all of your repeated help so many times and include the special Golden Shovel DIY Crafting recipe inside the letter as a present. You can craft the Golden Shovel using 1 Gold Nugget and 1 Shovel. Check out our complete guide to Golden Tools in Animal Crossing: New Horizons here.
While we haven’t been able to definitively confirm whether helping Pirate Gulliver specifically contributes towards unlocking the Golden Shovel, there is significant evidence to suggest this is the case.
Specifically, the Nook Miles Achievement called “Gulliver’s Travails” that tracks how many times you encounter and assist Gulliver does increase after you’ve helped out Pirate Gulliver. Therefore, it seems very likely that the game considers both versions of Gulliver to be the same for the sake of the Golden Shovel too.

Pirate Gulliver Speedrun Time Travel Method
Want to get all of the amazing Pirate themed items including furniture and clothing that we listed above? If you play normally, it could take more than half a year to obtain all of the unique items at least once, so those in a hurry may want to do some time traveling.
Thanks to some quirks in how Animal Crossing: New Horizons handles each day, there’s a pretty easy and efficient way to repeatedly complete Pirate Gulliver’s quest. By doing this, you can easily get every one of the exclusive Pirate furniture and clothing in just a couple hours.
Step 1: Time Travel Day By Day Until You Find Pirate Gulliver
The first step is pretty obvious, but you’ll need to time travel day by day checking your beaches until you find Pirate Gulliver once. To save you some time, pay attention to the title screen on each day as sometimes the camera will focus on a special visitor.
It won’t always show Pirate Gulliver on screen but if you see anyone else like Saharah, Flick, regular Gulliver, or any of the merchants outside of Resident Services, then you can safely assume Pirate Gulliver isn’t on your island and move on the next day.
Step 2: Note The Current Day & Complete The Quest
Once you find a day that has Pirate Gulliver on your island, make a special note somewhere of the current day incase you lose track and accidentally move to another day.
Now you can talk to Pirate Gulliver, find his Communicator in the ocean as usual, and return it to him.
Step 3: Time Travel Backwards To 4:58AM The Same Day
After you’ve helped out Pirate Gulliver, you want to save & exit, close the game, and change your Nintendo Switch’s date & time to just before 5AM on the same current day. You can pick exactly when, but we recommend around 4:58AM. Just make sure you have enough time to load up the game and sign in after changing the time before the clock hits 5AM.
Step 4: Wait For The New Day To Begin & Repeat
Once you’re loaded into the game just before 5AM, wait for the new day to begin at 5AM sharp! You should find your prize from Pirate Gulliver in the mail and a new Rusted Part in your Recycle Box.
But most importantly, you should be able to find Pirate Gulliver on your island and find his Communicator again for more Pirate items! Keep in mind his location will likely change though, so look around your entire beach. If you repeat this process, you can complete Pirate Gulliver’s quest as many times as you’d like!
Keep in mind that are limits to how many days Animal Crossing: New Horizons will keep in ‘state’ so to speak. We’re not sure of the exact time, but if you time travel more than a few days out of the day in which you found Pirate Gulliver, you may lose that spot and have to find him again on another day all over again.
